Non-resident fishing licence

September 03, 2014

Fish and Game are the organization delegated by the New Zealand government to manage the freshwater fishery, has introduced a new licence type for non-resident anglers.

So, for this upcoming season there are two licences available:·

A 24-hour licence at a cost of NZ $25 per angler, per day. There are no limits on the number of days for which you can purchase this licence and the cost is the same for resident and non-resident anglers alike.

A whole-season licence. Unless you’re a permanent resident of New Zealand, you will need to purchase the non-resident season licence at a cost of NZ $160 per angler for the entire season.

This is only slightly more than Kiwi residents pay (NZ $123). The non-resident season licence can also be endorsed to enable you to fish designated backcountry (remote) or controlled fisheries at no extra charge. The backcountry endorsement is needed in some parts of New Zealand, such as Central Otago, but not the Nelson/Marlborough/West Coast fishery.

Unlike many other parts of the world, the entire proceeds of our licences go towards supporting and managing the New Zealand fishery. Indeed, the revenue gained from non-resident licences has been ring-fenced and dedicated purely to management of our backcountry fisheries.
