Learn to fly fish like a pro at Owen River Lodge’s Fly Fishing school

September 20, 2021

By Felix Borenstein

Here’s a quick survey with only one question:

Why are you interested in fly fishing?

A. You like wearing waders.
B. You enjoy standing in rivers for hours and then going home.
C. You dream of making the perfect cast; catching a fast, fat, wily trout; getting your photo taken with it to show off to your friends; giving the fish a farewell kiss; and then releasing it back into the wild.
D. You figure it’s really easy to master. We’re just talking about dumb fish, after all.

If you answered “D”, best of luck. If you answered “A” or “B”, fair enough; you probably don’t need to read on. But if you answered “C”, we can definitely help make that dream come true.

Introducing Learn to Fly Fish School

Owen River Lodge, a luxury boutique fishing lodge just 90 minutes south of Nelson, is hosting a 3 night/2 day Learn to Fly Fish School in November and it’s going to be cool as hell.
You’ll get the same personalised attention and expert coaching that have won us a raft of national awards. You’ll learn a lot. You’ll have fun. You may even get hooked on angling. We certainly hope so because there are only so many skilled fly fishers to go around, and those big old fish aren’t going to catch themselves.

Professional fly-fishing instruction from a multi-award-winning team

Our friendly fishing guides and FFI-certified casting instructor will start by teaching you to cast if you’re a beginner, or show you how to improve your technique if you have a little experience.
Then you’ll spend two days learning to fly fish in our wonderful streams.
Every evening, our guides will teach you about:

• the physics of casting
• stream entomology
• fly selection
• river craft
• fly tying
• knot tying

AND they’ll be entertaining with it.

Not only will you learn the basics of fly fishing, you’ll be treated to some of New Zealand’s finest food and wine, and be spoilt with unpretentious, friendly service and stunning accommodations.
Bring a friend or we’ll pair you up with a new friend!
