April 2011 – Season Update
Firstly, I should talk about some very sad news – on February 22, 2011 Christchurch was hit by a large 6.3 magnitude earthquake.

Tragically, over 180 people lost their lives and Christchurch suffered severe damage. New Zealanders are a resilient lot, and it was heart warming to see the nation and overseas countries all pull together to help their fellow man.

The central business district of Christchurch was greatly damaged with the destruction also affecting many thousands of houses in the suburbs. However, less than 4 weeks later, electricity has been restored to almost everyone, as has water and sewage.

The Christchurch airport reopened the day after the earthquake and many hotels are now open.

Christchurch is in the process of rebuilding and my advice to our guests and potential guests is that if you’re planning on coming to the South Island please don’t be scared to fly into Christchurch and use it as a gateway to the rest of the South Island !

The regions close to Christchurch were unaffected by the earthquake, so Akaroa, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura and the southern towns of Wanaka and Queenstown are all open and ready for you to visit.

If you’d like to help the people of Christchurch, I recommend you donate to either the New Zealand Red Cross or the New Zealand Salvation Army.

Fortunately for us, we are located some 300 kilometers (180 miles) away from the epicentre of the quake and suffered no damage. For us, it’s business as usual !
So, on to the fishing!
We’re having an enormous season – in terms of the number of guests that have chosen to stay with us, the number of repeat guests (we call them repeat offenders) and the fish that have been caught ! Howard from Sydney stayed with us for the 5th season in a row and this time brought his mate Huon along for an introduction to Owen River Lodge and our unique fishery. Howard landed his largest brown ever – weighing in at 7.5 lb ! They must have enjoyed themselves as they’ve already rebooked for next season !

Patrick’s first 2 days of fishing action saw him land 17 browns - the largest at a tad over 7lb ! Patrick is turning into a serial repeat offender – having booked in for a return visit in December.
